It is situated along the banks of the Whitewater River near the intersection of State Route 34 and State Route 72, about 15 miles west of Cape Girardeau. The area was originally settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants, and the town was named after James Burford, who established a grist mill there in the mid-1800s.
